Renting (or not as the case may be)

Well at the 11th hour I have been turned down by a private landlord who despite agreeing to 6 months rent up front, did a credit check. Agencies in this area do not do any ref checks if you pay 6 months up front.

Anyway the check turned up 5 CCJs! I know of 3. The two others are for amounts of a few hundred pounds each. One is dated 2005 when I was out of the country for 6 months, the other is dated 2006 when I was back in the UK and I don't recall ever seeing the paperwork.

It seems to be harder and harder to rent nowadays in the private sector!!

    Hi

We have had a similar problem and the only real option for us was to look on Gumtree and in the local papers. We sent a message to each prospective landlord explaining the situation (we didn't apply to any agencies)

We're due to move in a couple of weeks time. We have references and a deposit and though BR OH has a really good job. But it did cut down drastically the choice we had and we gave up on estate agents because they make the appropriate noises but are no help at all and won't rent without a credit check.

Just keep trying and you'll get somewhere soon
    Good luck

Keep going MM. The more you try, the better the odds that you will find your next home. Get 6 on the go at once if you can! The more the merrier.

I've had an email back from a local estate agent who says 6 months up front and no credit or reference checks.

BTW I've used Gumtree. Lots of agents posing as private landlords on our one!

Sorry to hear that Mercman....I was declined for a property in Dec & they said it was CRA data....found out later that someone else applied who the landlord knew so he used the CRA as an excuse!!!

Don`t forget council & housing associations....get on the list anyway !!!

It is a bit off if they do it without your permission - because I was under the impression that they had to advise you that a CRA check would be done.

Don't know about your area of the country but everywhere I go I see rooms and properties to let, and I read on the BBC site that tennants are renegotiating with desperate landlords.

You never know it might be a blessing in disguise - he might be having issues himself.

    Good luck with the search.

The landlord is emigrating to Australia next week and was using the rent as an income stream! Thinking about it, it does seem dodgy!
