Jobseekers Allowance

Hi Guys,

Hope you are all well.......I need a little help with my jobseekers allowance, I was recently unemployed and decided to sign on. The process was finally finished and I receieved a letter explaining that I would get £60.50 every two weeks. When I put in the claim I reliased I didnt give them all the information, the stuff that I missed out on I have listed below:

- Bankrupt (happened last week)
- Live with my girlfriend in rented property and flatmate.
- My girlfreind is a student with no income.

Will any of this make a difference to the small amount I am recieving.

Look forward to your replies.

All the best.

Are you on income based JSA? If so, you need to tell them that you live with your girlfriend (I assume she has student funding?).

    Have you applied for LHA?

If you have been awarded contributions based JSA then probably not. If it's income based then also possibly not but it is more about current financial circumstnaces. In both situations I would suggest it is best to be open and honest and none of what you state would indicate to me that your claim would be effected. If anything, assuming you are a genuine resident of the property you share, you may be eligible for housing benefit and council tax benefit.

JSA advice isn't really my fort! and I am sure some others will be able to offer better advice but I would certainly say passing all relevant information to DWP is appropriate.

If he has been awarded income based JSA the fact that he is living with someone is very important. The gf must have some sort of income, be it from student finance or employment.

Well dmg, whilst I agree with you, you have quoted me slightly out of context. My immediately following sentence urges the OP to declare the information and the OP also stated, "- My girlfreind is a student with no income." I went with the information presented to me at the time.

No, I did not quote you out of context. You made a statement of (what you believed to be) fact, without having the full information. What you said afterwards does not take away what you stated (incorrectly) as fact.

If the student is an undergraduate, then even if they have chosen not to take any student finance, their joint application for JSA will be assessed as if she has taken out the loan (this is counted as income). If the student is not an undergraduate, but still claims to have no income, the JCP will want to know what she is living off.

The key question still remains, is the OP claiming IB or CB JSA?

You need to confirm which type of JSA you have been awarded. JSA (conts) is based on your NI conts, and is uneffected by the partners income.
However JSA ( income based) will likely be effected. Students are rarely classed ashaving "no income" any loans or grants she had (or qualified for) will be taken into account as income.
The flatmate and renting would only effect a housing benefit claim.
Given that the vast majority of JSA claims are done via the phone claiming system, they will normally ask about partners when doing the claim. Not sure how you didn't answer the question?

Guys thank you so much for the advice, I am claiming JSE just to confirm. Problem is I am paying no council tax, will that effect my claim and can I still apply for housing benefit?

Also what is a LHA as mentioned in my first reply?

I look forward to your replies.

    Thanks

    JSE?

LHA = Local Housing Allowance, the new form of Housing Benefit.

Why do you not pay Council Tax?

Bromarc - I think what the folks are trying toi ascertain is the type of JSA that you are on - is it contributions-based or income-based? It is likely to be same figure but there is a difference between the types and to confuse us all they say that its JSA - your letter will state what variant you are on.

You would need to approach your local council benefits section with regard to housing benefit and council tax benefit.

Nowhere in the paragraph you quoted (of which you chose to only quote half) does it make a statement of fact. They were my observations on the situation and quite rightly encouraged him to seek further advice. Your rather waspish response suggests that you did not bother or chose not to read the rest of my post and digest it appropriately.

Perhaps a more polite tone might be appropriate in future to others who like to help and support?
