telephone cable, I'm confused!

I've got a BT cordless phone downstairs and it used to randomly announce that the answer was on/off at all time of the day from the base unit, I managed to stop that by turning off the sound completly so just the handsets ring, so all seemed ok.
Now the base unit just constantly beeps at me, I can make a call so the line is working ok, just with an annoying beep! I've unplugged it all and started again, same problem.
I then plugged in an old corded phone but that doesn't work at all, Are there different types of telephone cables or are they all the same ? I only have the one that came with the cordless.
I just want a phone that works  Has anyone got any ideas?
:hello: Hiya, I'm single mom, avid moneysaver and freecycler, sometimes  but definatly :D

  • BT is the standard so all communication cable's are the same. The handset should be on the docking station at all times to charge, my mums does that I think. I use Panasonic cordless, just works. BT sets have there own funny ways that I do not like. The wired phone should work but may be faulty.

Have you thought about reading the phone's instruction book? It may tell you what the beeping is all about. Maybe beeping because the battery is flat. Is there a battery in it?
    What make phone?

We only ever charge our cordless handset when run out, every 3 to 5 days depending on usage - it greatly increases the life of the batteries (just don't run them totally flat).

Theres no batterys in the base unit, so it's not that and nothing in the manual about a constant beep, no symbols or lights show up either, weird.
The reason I ask about separate wires is that when I first got the phone I plugged it in and it would not work until I used the supplied cable. The original one from the previous phone would not work and in the manual it states that the correct wire must be used so thought maybe that was the prob.

    Ask the manufacturer?
