The Age of Stupid

http://www.ageofstupid.net/

I should have posted this last week really but if you get a chance, go see this film. It has had very limited release in the Cinemas but will be released to independent ones in May and DVD release in June.
Everybody needs to see this film, I dragged my partner along thinking he would hate it (he's a real climate change sceptic) but he thought it was really good and it's changed his mind on a lot of issues that I've been trying to convince him of for ages.
It's a really balanced film - not just a guilt trip and it leaves you feeling like you need to do something now!

  • If Charles Dickens was alive today he would probably call this the 'Age of Foolishness', but the Age of Stupid will do. The aim of this film is to persuade people that mankind needs to change direction and urgently. If it does this then it will be successful; if not then it will be another well-meaning attempt. I agree with the basic message although I did not like the style of the film. It is probably aimed at a younger audience than me. Some of the jokes were good, but some were too fast for me to take in. What was the 'Lord Clarkson' joke? The audience laughed but I missed it. I wish this film every success.

Haven't seen this film but had a look at the website and saw it is about "stopping Climate Change".

I must confess to being a total sceptic on the subject of man-made climate change. If man is changing the climate (which I still doubt !) the only way to stop it is (if you believe the Al Gore acolytes) is to cut CO2 emissions by 80%, or some such figure.
This figure is impossible to achieve ! The "civilised" West would not stand for being returned to almost Stone Age standards of living and the "third" world will not take a blind bit of notice - you tell 3 billion Chinese and Indians that they can't have a car and electricity !

If the climate is changing as part of a natural cycle, we are all wasting our time and effort anyway.
The money would be far better spent on trying to keep the population down.

Thanks for your interesting post moonrakerz. I'm not a scientist and often find even the basic facts confusing. On the one hand The World Glacier Monitoring Services claim that the world's glaciers are melting faster and faster whereas the respected professor David Bellamy claims that 555 of the world's 625 glaciers are increasing in size. In fact he regards the idea that mankind could affect the climate as "poppycock". Most climate scientists believe CO2 affects the climate and others believe it has no effect.
But just in case the climate scientists are right, I am reducing my own carbon footprint (and saving money at the same time). Each individual is free to make his/her own decision of course.

Absolutely ! But I do get a little weary of being looked upon as a "non-believer", someone who should be taken away and "re-educated" !

I too am reducing my carbon footprint - not because I think I am saving the planet, but for the more selfish reason of saving money.

It really is laughable for people to fly to Florida for their hols then think by paying some "green" organisation to plant a couple of trees (which they may or may not !) they are doing your bit. If they are serious, they should get the train to Frinton-on-Sea for their hols.!

Yes I agree completely. People can start with the small things but until a new source of energy is developed regular long-distant plane travel will eventually have to go.

The reason could be that many forums get swamped with uneducated, abusive posts from people who can only be described as deniers, and I assume that you, unfortunately, must be getting tarred with the same brush. It would be great if discussions could always be conducted in a civilised way with good points made by each side.
    Just my opinion.
