Claiming Travel Expenses

I currently live within a 10 walk of work and later in the year we are due to move premisses which will take me about an hour to get to on the bus and cost me roughly £60 a month in fares
Am I entitled to claim this back or is it all at the employers discretion?

Surely you are joking? The employer has no obligation to pay your travelling expenses to and from work - they will normally only pay if say they asked you to visit another place as part of your work ie. another part of the country - travelling to and from the workplace isnt paid for by the employer.
£60 is a lot for bus fares - look at getting a season ticket - go for a peak one and that shouldnt really cost you more than £30 (that's about the price it is in Birmingham). You can hop on and off buses all day then without having to pay a sub because you are a twirly (off peak - called too early as they don't kick in til 9.30am).0 -

£60 a month? For four years I paid £160 a month in bus and train fares to get to work.
In today's economic climate I wouldn't be overly keen on rocking the boat. If you don't want the job I'd imagine there are hundreds of others – if not thousands – out there only to willing to take it off your hands, and foot the travel costs without complaint! :rolleyes:If I don't respond to your posts, it's probably because you're on my 'Ignore' list.0 -
I know that if you work for our local authority that they will pay the difference in costs or mileage for up to 5 years. The IVF worked;DS born 2006.0

http://www.hefcw.ac.uk/InternalPolicies_Docs/Excess_Mileage_April_07.pdf shows you what Higher Education Funding Council for Wales would do - it mightn't be relevant to you, but shows what some companies do.

Every employer I have worked for has only paid travel expenses if you are visiting a different branch etc. They have never paid for travel to your main place of work. To be honest I don't think it would be good if employers did this as they might start favouring job applicants who live nearby!
I don't think you'd get a lot of sympathy from an employer over £60 a month as that is a lot lower than a lot of employees pay for travel.0 -
Contact your HR about this one. Recently some of my colleagues who worked in my office, relocated to a new office a few miles away. This "upheaval" has resulted in various amounts of renumeration and may even include travelling expenses for the first 12 months.
I often say that if you don't ask, you don't get but in this instance my colleagues got it out of the blue and were very pleasantly surprised.0 -
I *might* have the same issue one day... so if I were in your shoes, I'd be talking to the boss first, pointing out the extra cost (£60 a month), then asking for a £1k pay rise to cover the extra expense.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Why not put a notice on your staff notice board, asking for a lift, with contribution to fuel costs?0
