We used to give my cousin £20 for either Friday / Saturday night, typically 8pm - Midnight (sometimes later)
She'd also free reign of the kitchen, games console, DVDs, sky etc...

  • Always wandered this myself and had always gone with the theory that you'd need to pay them what they could earn in Tescos... So I always reconed about £5/hr. I suppose also it depends on if they are a relative (You may get a bit of a discount then).
  • I think it also depends on whether it's a regular thing or a one-off. For example, when I babysat - many years ago now - I didn't get top whack but I knew I would get a night's babysitting at least once a week. I occasionally also babysat for people other than my regular family and was paid more but had no expectation of being asked again.
  • I run babysitting courses as part of my job for 13-18yr olds and we suggest for a 17yr old who has completed our course to charge £3.50-£5 an hr depending on if they have any experience of babysitting.

I am a qualified childrens nurse and night nanny, babysit and do 24hr care and I charge from £10 an hr.

but thats the difference you pay for a teenager to a qualified and experienced person.

I tend to care for babies and young children so parents want that reassurance.

I have babysat since i was 13yrs old and babysat twins of 4wks along with 5 siblings at the age of 15!!

My daughter is nearly 15 and would like to find jobs to make a bit of money. She used to be a paper girl but we moved and she had to let the job go. Anyway, she was getting too old. I think babysitting would be a good option for her as she likes children and I was interested in the course you teach. Could you give me more details?
By the way, if anybody is interested in a babysitter, we are in East Belfast!

£5 an hr is very fair, this is what I was earning babysitting 4 years ago and I was 22 and qualified!

yep the course I run is a 6week course just over an hr each week and they are taught feeding, bathing, dressing, nappy changing, playing - age appropriate, reading age appropriate stories, behaviour management (basic level), little child protection, personal safety when looking for work, attending interviews, what to charge, suitable hours to work. we teach minor injuries but not first aid as such.

this 6 weeks gives them a certificate that says they have attended by we are not recommending them as a sitter or saying they are competent to babysat and that the parent should make their own checks

we also have a disclaimer that says there is no law regarding the age of babysitters however parents are responsible for their children if left in the care of a person under the age of 16yrs.

    hope this helps

contact your school nurse should have something like that in ireland think you have public health nurses.

(I am in east midlands in England and work as a school nurse employed by primary care trust and cover a number of schools)

the course I run is for a max of 10 young people and is free as run during school time.
