Another one here with the later dinner - usualy 7.30-8pm ish. I do have home-made sorbet in the freezer for snacking afterwards which is occassionally needed. I don't feel guility about eating it as there's not much too it & it's cheap + easy to make.Still wish I could buy a TARDIS instead of a house!0

??? Do people have tea then supper? We have tea about 6 if its with the kids, or later if we are eating on our own, but we never have supper. If i stay up really late which is rare (after 11) I have a bagel or a bowl of porridge.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

I'm a bit surprised to find that eating after your evening meal is called anything other than snacking!!
My parents always referred to our main meal which we had in the evening as 'supper'.Breakfast, lunch and supper was what we had.We had tea at weekends at about 4 o clock, and that was a bit of cake and a cup of tea.I've got out of the habit of calling our evening meal supper since I first moved in with OH - he calls it tea.Dinner sounds too posh to me!
Anyway food eaten later than the evening meal is snacking in my book - doesn't stop me doing it though :rotfl:0 -

actually the terminology confused me too, but being an american ex-pat i'm used to that (though thankfully not so much after 7 years in scotland!)
in the states it's generally breakfast, lunch and dinner though some southern regions will call it supper i believe supper was used more often back in the 50's-60's now though definately dinner everywhere i've lived though i'm sure there are regional differences
i have a funny story about eating time terminology
when i was fresh from the states we were staying in a hostel on the isle of skye for awhile while we were trying to find a house to rent.
anyway we'd gotten friendly with some australian guys and one night dh had to work late so they invited me to have tea with them... i politely declined thanking them for offering but explaining that i didn't much care for tea
now the shock was that i was dishing up my dinner at the time (and i'm not skinny so i must like my food a bit at least) fortunately they realised and asked me to sit down and eat with them and we all had a good laugh...
actually, i DO drink tea now, but i'm only a social drinker :rotfl:founder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -

We don't have a set tea as such, but now dd is on solids we eat quite a bit earlier than we used to - 6.30ish. I am absolutely starving come 8 or 9 and so am pretty naughty and snack on rubbish like crisps or choccie!"I've fallen down a hole" - said in best Monty Python voice-over.0

thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply.
its interesting to see how much opinion varies - from those who eat supper and those who dont, to those who call their main evening meal supper.
well in our house it was always breakfast, dinner/lunch and then tea. supper was never a done thing ( except on the occasions we would have pudding later than normal).
however, because of the nature of our timetables, its a meal that really needs to be added.
because of work commitments mon-fri, i get in from uni and we have to have tea by about 5-5.30 to allow enough time for us to both get to work by 6.30 (some nights it can be even earlier because of the way the shifts are rota'd).. i normally get home around 8-9. OH will not get in from work until 1-2am in the morning. its not uncommon for me to still be awake when he gets home. we really find that we need to eat around the 9 o clock mark, otherewise we are both painfully hungry by the time he gets in (we both do a physical job, OH even more so).
OH is quite content eating a small portion of cereal and a yoghurt (he's watching his weight), whilst i find this doesn't fill me up enough. yet at the same time, i dont want anything much heavier
some of you have made some great suggestions, which i will definatly be trying. i aim to increase my fruit and veg intake over lent, so this is something i could perhaps incorporate. and i bought popcorn kernals today too!
i will keep you posted, and let you know how things go. please keep your ideas and comments flowing.

i've been insulin resistant for nearly 11 years now and something i have used in the past for near bedtime food (to keep bloodsugar levels stable) is to have a glass of slim fast made with milk and the powder and some ice.
it's easy to digest, has plenty of protein in it and added vitamins and some of the flavours aren't too bad.
i only ever used it as a supplement because we stay up so late i needed something many nights as we had to eat around 5:30 (dd was only 2 and couldn't wait) then i'd be up til 2pm easy... i can't go for 8+ hours without food unless i'm sleeping, otherwise i get all woozy and once my bloodsugar gets that low i'm playing catchup for days so i was doing this to keep myself stable
fortunately i don't need to do it anymore as i've got better control now (and i'm eating later at night too, going to bed earlier) but it really helped a lot
fruit and veg are healthier but if you're like me and prone to heartburn the slim fast is a very digestible alternativefounder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -
We have breakfast, lunch then dinner, and usually eat dinner (our main meal of the day) around 7.30-8.30 depending when I get back from work, so we don't eat after that. When I was young we always had dinner around 7, when my dad got back from work. When my sister and I were little we would have ours earlier, before dad got back. I lived abroad and it has always seemed quite a strange english tradition to eat so early in the evening (unless you have kids in which case it sort of makes a bit more sense to me).0
