Pay off old debt?

I have recently been declined for a mortgage and have 2 defaults on my credit file.
One default for £200 and £330, i know that i could go down the route to getting them removed by requesting the letter of default notice. Has anyone ever considered asking them that if you pay the debt off in full (even though it is now stated as satisfied and has been for 3 years) they would remove the default? i dont know if this would work or if its legal or possible but any views/opinions very welcome
Thanks guys
Nathan
