Splitting up - mortgage repayments

Help! I am splitting up with my partner. House is up for sale and I am wanting to pay my half of the mortgage repayments direct to Northern rock but they say if my partner doesn't pay his half (which he is threatening me with) any arrears are still joint debts.
Is there any way round this? It doesn't seem fair and it could be ages til house is sold. We already in negative equity and I don't want repossession as we would both be evenn worse off in the end.

Unfortunately there's no way around it - it's a joint debt, you're both 'jointly and severally' liable for it.
The only way to be really sure is to pay it all yourself, but try and explain to your (ex-)partner the consequences of him not paying his share - wrecked credit rating etc.
Edit - just read your other post re your partner being abusive. Obviously makes your life much more difficult, but won't change the financial facts. Keep a record of everything you do pay.Mortgage Free thanks to ill-health retirement0 -
The two people named on the mortgage are jointly and severally liable for the payments. So if your partner pays nothing they will try to get all the money from you................................I have put my clock back....... Kcolc ym0

What plans do you have to deal with the negative equity? If you can't raise enough money to clear the mortgage (from the sale and any savings you may have) the lender won't release the charge on the property and you won't be able to sell.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
