Unfair charge for Loan that has been paid off

Hi

I had a loan with the Abbey and in August 2008, i requested the final amount payable as i wanted to pay the loan off. I received the total and duley paid the total stipulated to close the account.

I have suddenly received a letter from them, which is totally out of the blue, asking for an unpaid amount of £90 from August! As i had requested the balance to close the account and paid the amount in full, i was surprised to be told i know owed them money!

Can anyone tell me if the bank can suddenly demand money 7 months after the loan account was cleared?

Did you get a letter from them after your payment in 2008 confirming your loan was paid off?
If you did send them a copy of this. I supect there was some interest they may not have included in the settlement?
I certainly would be asking where they are getting the £90 from and how it is calculated. If they miss calculated the settlement figure, and you paid the amount quoted in good faith they should write off the £90.
At this stage find out why they are asking for this and go from there?

BTW just thought, when was your normal payment in August 08. Could they have given you a settlement figure including that months payment (the settlement letter will normally say this figure assumes all direct debits up to xx (date) are paid) but because you paid it off you cancelled that months DD. Could this be one payment that was missed??
