Newbie feeling a bit worried

Hi,

I've had Lowell/Red on the phone about an old overdraft with Barclays for £270. I've made a payment of £20 and will pay £40 over the next few months until the debt is cleared.

My question is I've read lots of post advising people not to speak to Debt Collection Agencies over the phone. I'm just wondering why this is? And have I made a massive error by talking to them?

(Just to say I have no problem paying the money back).

The only problem with speaking to them is they will often put pressure on you to pay more than you can afford and use bullying tactics. You've done nothing wrong in speaking to them as you've come to an agreement you seem happy with.

How old is old?

Do you realise that if a debt is over 6 years old, you are not required to pay a penny? That is the law and it is 5 years in Scotland.
