Advice from 2nd jobbers re tax & career

Hi all
just wondered if anyone could give me some advice on taking a 2nd job in a local supermarket.
I currently work FT (tho flexible hours as a civil servant) and earn around £28,000 pa. Thinking of taking a second job to help pay off my ridiculous debt a bit quicker and have found that a Sainsburys near to where I work. I previoulsy worked for sainsburys as a student so know the deal with working on the checkout. The advert I have seen them advertising for 13 hours broken down friday evening to sunday which I think would suit me best.
I just wanted advice on tax (i.e I have worked out I could be around £245 a month better off which would help) but i have worked this out on the basis that I would still be paying 25% tax. Sainsburys salary for this is £6.30 ph.
So can anyone advise if this seems about right based on the 13 hours or is it affected by the fact its a second job? Also do I have to tell my main employer?
Also how have people found taking a second job for a short period of time impacts on the development of thier career? Will probably be looking to apply for a promotion in another civil service type role in the next 6 months or so so just wondered how this might impact? Does anyone else working at a supermarket pt find you are too knackered to do anything else when you get in?!
Sorry to go on!
Thanks:D

You will pay the basic rate of 20% on any additional PAYE job. You won't pay any NI contributions as your first job pays these, just as your first job also uses up your tax allowances. So 20% on everything from Sainsburys. Where have you got 25% from?0

Shame on you! Working for the Government too!
From one civil servant to another - you are required to inform your employing Department as far as I'm aware. It could be deemed a conflict of interest, depending on your area of work. 0 -
