Tesco Olive Spread - or is it?

Bought the Tesco own brand Olive Spread, 500g, (equivalent to the Bertolli), last week and opened it this weekend. but it doesn't smell or look like the olive oil spread we used to use (have used the Flora and Bertolli prior to this tub and the Tesco one prior to those so i have last used the Tesco brand about 3months ago).

it smells and tastes more buttery - has anyone else noticed this and can it be possible that a 'different' product is actually in the Tesco tub?
not sure whether i can take it back or if they will take it back (as i quite like the buttery taste though having to convince my tastebuds it is the milder olive oil spread!).

can this be possible?

Hi we noticed our last tub of Tesco Olive Spread looked different too - it seems more yellowy and also has a strong smell.
Don't know why it is different but my family don't like this as much so will probably have to go back to Bertolli as we used this before changing to tesco's own - only problem is that it is much more expensive!!

Assuming that the product in the tub is correct then it may be prudent to look at the ingredients. Maybe Bertolli has a greater percentage of Olive oil

We had this too with tesco spread, yuck is all I can say, every time I opened pot nearly heaved! Kept thinking it smelt off, glad it's not just me who noticed this.

  • Funnily enough we noticed this yesterday also. I wonder if they've changed the recipe recently, or if they have put the wrong ingredients into the production line. Seems strange we've all noticed, and I also noticed the colour was different. How strange!!

I stopped buying Tesco own olive spread when I looked at the ingredients and discovered how low the percentage of olive oil in it was. If I remember correctly it was only about 6%!!! Even Bertolli only has 21%.

In any case, surely the benefits of olive oil are from the pure stuff, not adulterated with various chemicals or fats? The "mediterranean diet" does NOT include olive oil spread but a small amount of real butter (have you seen how small the blocks of butter are abroad?) and lots of real olive oil, sometimes sprinkled on bread.

Doesn't it amount to the same thing, i.e. a mixture of olive oil and fat(s)? Actually most mediterraneans I've seen don't bother with the butter and just have olive oil on their bread, or just dip the butterless crusts in the oil.

Ugh yes The spread is vile, no one will eat it. Do Tesco allow you to return items if you're not happy with them?
