I wasn't aware until a friend told me but our local council provide a catering service that also make cakes their prices are excellent. I've just had an email with a photo of a wedding cake that looks lovely. Definitely thinking of getting my wedding cake from them. So it's worth checking if your council do a similar service, does look like a good way to save money.

I rang them up and I have to go and see their baker at the end of the week, thay can do fruit , chocolate, madeira or sponge. Just got to find some ideas of cakes we like to take in and show him. Sounds like they can really do something personal.
Aaaargh got to find some nice cakes!!!Booo!!!0 -
There are millions of cakes on the net (and me on a diet too!!!) did see a really simple idea for a cake topper it looks like wire bent into the shape of 2 hearts with pink and white marshmallows threaded onto the wire. It looked lovely.Booo!!!0

Oh dear I managed to find a cake, had a nice meeting with the baker and after a week they have got back to me with a price was a bit stunned that it was £230 , which I know isn't outrageous for a wedding cake but just going by the prices on the website & leaflet I thought it would be a lot less. My mil to be has offered to pay for it but I can't justify that price.
Think I will get something from M&S just the simple tiers and decorate them with something simple.
Think my mil thinks I will be making do etc but I'm not it's just too much to pay for cake.
We will come up with something fab I'm sure.Booo!!!0 -
Why not ask at your nearest college that has a cake dec class. Ask the tutor if she could rec anyone to do it for you and tell her the price you have in mind. I've done a course and quite a few people come looking for cakes.0

I might try that, thanks for the suggestion although I emailed them about someone doing photography who might like to do a wedding and have never had a response , not even to acknowlege my email. Why not ask at your nearest college that has a cake dec class. Been looking on ebay and I quite like these to decorate
Perhaps with this topper
Really just started looking so any help would be appreciated.Booo!!!0 -
How about a single tier for a display cake that everyone sees, pics of you slicing the cake etc, and when the staff take it away to divide up, have another additional, plainer cake to divide up between all the guests. You could have a chioce of fruit cake, and sponge/chocolate sponge too. Oh, stop me, I'm on a diet too you know!! hahah0

why don't you consider buying these from ebay and perhaps buying a cheaper iced cake from Asda and doin a trial to see if you can achieve what you'd like? or just get two or three tiers iced by some shop or college and decorate with the ebay items yourself. its quite easy to dowel a cake than all you need is glue to stick your butterflies on?
Or perhaps contact the nearest British Sugarcraft Guild?0
