Am I entitled to redundancy payment???

Dont know if this is in the right section, please feel free to move.......
Last year my employment was terminated after 27 years. I think I was treated very shabbily by my employer. It was due to Ill health. My boss, who had only taken over 3 years earlier, didnt even have the decency to let me know I had finished, I heard it second hand. Prior to this illness I hadnt even filled in a sick note before and rarely took time off. It has been suggested to me that I may have been entitled to some sort of redundancy pay, although nothing was ever mentioned by my boss, having said that I got my P45 through the post, with no explanation at all!
Does anyone know if I could claim anything? Have I left it too late now?

I am no expert on these matters but I am sure there are 'procedures' that need to be gone through before someone can just be 'sacked' because of ill health.... someone will come along I am sure with more insight into your situation...... did they ever give a reason why you were dismissed? seems as though they didn't even have the decency to give you reasons for this.....

6 months is the time limit for applying to an employment tribunal.

The DTI http://www.dti.gov.uk/er/ have a load of info.

A lot depends on what your contract says & whether your employer followed those procedures or were trying to kick you out on ill-health grounds (which is a legal justification for dismissal) in an attemt to avoid redundancy.

If you're a member of a trade union speak to them.
