I was using I tunes then changed to Limewire, had to pay an initial fee of £17.00 then all the downloads are free, I think its legal?!You can if you think you can!0

Limewire is P2P, it's not legal. And you shouldn't have been charged £17.00 to pay for the software, it's free.
There is a Russian site floating around the forums, I can't remember it.
Unless I only want 1 or 2 songs from the album, I would buy the CD and rip it into Itunes and move it to my mp3 player. CDs have better audio quality than the mp3s you would buy. And with so many cheap CD sites, it's cheaper than downloading!
There are currently no subscription sites which let you keep the music when you stop.
Amazon.com have some free music downloads. (it's not on the .co.uk site)0 -
I don't think there currently are any subscription sites that are compatible with an iPod. Almost all of the subscription sites use Microsoft's Plays For Sure format (Protected WMA) which iPods don't support.0

That Russian site isn't permitted to be posted here, it is of (to say the least) dubious legality.0

Busted.... I too paid the £17..... I thought it was legal as I had to pay.... I don't even know what I'm doing. Very disappointing turn up then.0 -
Hi,
I recently signed up with wippit (https://www.wippit.com). It costs 4.99 a month or 50 quid for the year - I looked around and worked out that there was at least 50quid's worth of CD's on there that I could find (Franz Ferdinand, White Stripes etc.), so took the plunge and signed up for a year.
You get unlimited downloads on the subscription tracks (not all the tracks are subscription - beware), but I found enough for my tastes and find myself downloading extra albums that I like the sound of, just to see what they're like (no cost - why not ?)
The website isn't the easiest to use and I still can't get the download manager working, but overall, I'm pretty impressed and like the fact that it's 100% legal with no grey areas at all !!!
Hope this helps,

I have a feeling Napster is a subscription job these days...and is now all legal too. Head to https://www.napster.co.uk for a free 7 day trial.
Let us know what it's like if you give it a go?0 -
Napster is subscription and legal, but you don't keep the music when the subscription ends.
"6. What happens to the music I downloaded to my PC if I cancel my Membership?
If you cancel your Membership, the music you downloaded from Napster will no longer be playable at the end of your current billing period. You can still use Napster Light to play and organise all of the music you own without a membership fee. Access Napster Light with the same user name and password. With Napster Light, you can also sample 30-second clips and buy tracks for 79p and albums from £7.95. If you decide to resume your Napster Membership, your Napster music library will be restored and your downloaded music will be playable again."0 -
Wippet.com was at least a legal P2P http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/03/05/wippit_preps_easyjetstyle_music_download/ , Limeware is mostly illegal (you can find legal stuff to share on there, but the vast majority isn't), and as for alltomp3, the chances of this site having the legal right to distribute material in the UK is dubious to say the least. http://www.digitalmediaasia.com/default.asp?ArticleID=6550Originally Posted by richardjames73
