Chinese leaf lasts better than lettice as it is not so thin - gives a nice crunch to the salad too.

No absolutely any old contrainer will do. I got some value seed trays las year for 10 for a £1 from B&Q so im using those...theyll do fine on a window ledge. All you need to do is water regularly. Few weeks- eat.
Thanks for this I didn't realise that you could keep lettuce in something as shallow as a seed tray. I'm very pushed for space, but I'm sure i could squeeze a tray on a window still somewhere0 -

these are the leaves, not "whole " lettuces. I have tried those and fialed.
I got a packet of seeds - forthergills- called Italian salad including rocket, basil, lollo rosso nad a couple of others, these do fine in trays. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
Growing the cut and come again mixes is great. You pick the leave you want, and there's a lot of variety in the pack. If you don't pick the poor things to death they'll crop at least 3 times.
You can sow them now if you have somewhere quite bright to keep them (they'll go leggy in a normal place at the minute cos there's not enough light, or at least not in the North!)
Lidl and Aldi both have cheap compost and seeds in at the minute. Its really easy to do and almost impossible to muck up. Fill a tray with compost, water it lightly, sprinkle over the seeds, sprinkle a very fine layer of soil over, lightly water again and pop in a sunny place.
They look very pretty in a hanging basket, and you can grow cherry tomato plants in the middle - salad in a basket!

llh189 - I'm lucky I suppose, I have 5 different supermarkets within a short distance, so I can pick and choose whichever is best. I go to the market once a week and pick up good stuff there too. I agree with Buddingblonde that chinese leaf is tastier and it keeps better than most lettuce. If you tear the leaves or use a plastic knife to cut the lettuce it won't go brown.
Sainsbury had an advert on tv last night about cheap veg this week, so make the most of it. Hope you enjoy your salads anyway!

One tip I found useful when making salads to take to work that contained cucmber was to scrape the seeds out and chop the flesh for the salad - this the salad doesn't go soggy with the water from the cucumber seeds.
Thanks for all the replies, I am sitting here contemplating salad for lunch tomorrow with a Tuna Light Lunch pack ...yum!Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re probably right ~ Henry Ford0 -
Asda sell living lettuce - a selection of lettuces growing in a tub ready for you to cut as required. Just keep it watered and it will keep growing0
