Home Tutoring

For the las couple of months I've been helping my son to prepare for his GSCes in particular with Maths.....to the extent that he has told my mum that he has learnt more from me than his maths teacher.

So I was wondering would you use someone who offered maths tution if they weren't a qualified maths teacher? Obviously I couldn't (or wouldn't) claim to be a qualified maths teacher but wondered if people would even consider use someone like me ?

There does seem to be a shortage of maths tutors around. I could see you having some success with tutoring GCSE, but maybe more with boosting for Year 6 SATs. I think you'd have to be cheaper than a tutor. Tutors around our way cost approx £25 an hour. You could probably charge £10-£15 and get work near exam times. Ongoing, word of mouth could allow you to up your fees to the cheaper endof the qualified tutoring market.

Your strong selling points would be that parents often want their child to improve in confidence (ie maths skills may not be that weak, but confidence is boosted by going thro the work on a 1 to 1 level) and children often won't work for their parents but will for someone else.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

    Hi mountainofdebt,
There is a huge demand for maths tutors (I know beacuse I am one!) and you may find you are able to get work without being a qualified teacher- even tutoring agencies take people on without a teaching qualification, as long as they have a degree- not sure whether this applies to you or not? The best place to start would be to offer your services to children of people you know, at a reasonable price- say £10-15/h. Build yourself a reputation and you will find you will get plenty of work from there.... I only ever advertised once and have now had over 45 pupils. If you can get yourself a CRB check this would be well worth your while, but it is not easy to get without working with children. If you volunteer to help out on a school trip or something similar the school will arrange for you to get a CRB check. If you need any info feel free to PM me.

I have been CRB checked through vountary work that I am involved so I guess the next step would be to advertise!

As for advertising I'd go for Vivastreet to start with. I've had quite a few enquiries through my ad there. I'm a maths tutor too by the way, no teaching qualification but I do have a maths degree.
