Home-made eczema cream

I watched the 'grow your own drugs' programme and wanted to have a go at making the eczema cream. My little one has a mild but irritating condition.
It needs - beeswax, dried chamomile, almond oil, glycerine, vitamin C powder and Violas.

I had a look on the internet by googling these but I can't find a one site for all and so the p&p would be huge.
Does anyone have a site/shop that they would recommend for these type of things. I could probably get a few from my local chemist (almond oil) but not sure of the others (apart from the violas which will be the local garden centre)

should get almond oil a glycerine and vit c from chemist, glycerine will also be available from cake decorating suppliers as its used to keep icing soft.

chamomile is in chamomile teabags if you can't get it any other way (just check ingredients to make sure its pure). I got beeswax sticks from an old school diy shop for furniture polish - but I think neals yard if you have one also stock it.

My dd also has mild excema, could you post a link for the recipe?

I'm not sure about quantities you have to purchase, but they might be worth a try.

Did the recipe ask for a specific kind of chamomile? Roman chamomile is the one generally found in teabags, it's used for relaxing. It's the German or Blue chamomile (which apparently isn't a true chamomile at all according to some people) that has more of the anti-inflamatory azurline(?) in it. You should be able to obtain either from a good herbalist.

I saw this programme and from what I can remember the guy said you could use camomile teabags.
  • Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. • I have got the glycerine and almond oil today from boots. Off in search of the others.

they did an uncontrolled trial on 3 people and they all seemed to find that it improved the condition and would mean that they wouldn't have to use skin-thinning steroids.
Anyway, it is worth a try.

Why go to all this trouble? If I had excema / contact dematitis I would use 1% hydrocortisone during the day, and smother my hands in olive oil last thing at night. Pop a pair of old socks on top and see the improvement by morning.

Topical steroids are only skin thinning if used inappropriately over a period of time. 1% HC is mild and if used on the affected area should clear up moderate cases in a matter of days. Put that in your shopping basket whilst you're at Boots!

  • The cream is actually for my 5 year old. He has it on the inside of his elbow and back of knees and would need steroids quite often at times when it flairs up - affected by pefumes in things e.g washing powders, which we avoid but have a problem with sun cream and new clothes etc.
He is very good and doesn't fuss too much about it. We use a thick cream every day but if this works it is much thinner and hopefully more pleasant for him.
You seemed a bit touchy with my suggestion about not using steroids - not sure why if this works as well (if it doesn't well that is fair enough - i'm not silly about medication and would def. use it if there was no alternative)
