Removing Satisfied Defaults

Hi I recently applied for a mortgage for a shared equity scheme and was accepted by Abbey so progressed with the rest of the application.
Abbey conducted a survey and when they were sending me out the forms to sign I was advised by my mortgage advisor that Abbey have pulled out of shared equity schemes!
When trying to progress with other lenders the mortgage advisors have had no joy as they are saying that a default is on my account. I have obtained a credit report and there is one there however it was obviously there when Abbey did a credit check but was not a problem.
Any way I have called the people that I owe money to and they have advised if I pay this in full the debt would show as settled. However having read a lot of these posts I don’t think that this will make a difference. Do I have the right to ask them to remove this completely so that I can progress with the mortgage?
Thanks for your help.
