Its your mums council house, she is the one that has run up the discount, sorry but this really is a bug bear of mine, why should you have the discount?
Without knowing any details, you would need to be on the rent book before you could buy the house, unless you were to give your mum the money to buy the house in her name.Debt free and plan on staying that way!!!!0 -
its the house i grew up in, i dont want it to go if anything happens to my mum. therefor want to buy it for mum but obviously dont have that sort of money to just give her0

hi
we bought our council house 3 years ago and yes you can buy your mums council house as long as you still live there as my next door neighbours son wanted to buy it with his mum and as he was still living there he could im not sure if you can do it if you didnt live there unless your mum bought it with you
go to the council and get your right to buy booklet that should give you all the information you need
i hope this helps:D0 -
This sort of thing i.e.\buying a council house when you are getting worried that your parent will die/need residencial care is not right. Your mother has the right to buy not you, should she wish to buy it then it is up to her to find a mortgage lender. The fact that you were brought up in the house is neither here or there. Your Mum was no doubt glad of the opportunity to rent low cost social housing. When she no longer needs it then another family can benefit.
However should you still be living with your mother then it may be that the tenancy can be passed to you, then when you have rented for the requisite number of years you will be offered the opportunity to buy it.
Should you buy it now and your mother need residencial care in the future then I am sure the house would have to be sold to fund any care needed.0 -
If a family are living in a council house i.e. mother, father and 2 sons. The mother and father are on the tenancy agreement and not the two sons as they are still at schools. The kids grow up and start working and the parents retire. The family dont have any savings and the parents never saved any money and they never thought about buying the council house they live in. Suppose neither of the two sons left home and once they started working they were contributing towards paying the rent.
Do the sons not have the right to buying their family home, obviously the parents are retired and have no income to get a mortgage.
To the OP go to your councils housing department and pose the questions. I'm assuming your still living with your mother. I personally know of someone who bought their council house with the mortgage in their name and their parents name. The parents were the only people on the tenancy agreement.Debt at highest (November 2005) = £35,856
Debt currently (August 2006) = £20,790
&More £1,530, Egg £6,800, HSBC £3,760, Egg Loan £8,700
Interim goal = £23,400 (Target: February 2006, Missed but acheived May 2006)
2nd Interim Goal = £15,000, Target October 2006
Debt Free Date = February 2008 BUT I'M GOING TO BE TRYING FOR SOONER!!!

Firstly get any repairs done before you make clear your interest in buying as once you show this interest no repairs will be undertaken, Secondly you can only do it if .
1) You are currently a tenant at that address
2) You get a joint morgage with the named tenancy holder eg your mother. If it doesnt pay rent sell it.
Mortgage - £2,000

i know of two sons who lived in a 4 bedroomed house with their dad (dad was the tenent)dad died and council said to the sons if you move to a smaller house you will be put as the tenent so they could buy but start from scratch they didnt want to buy another person i know bought his c/house he then rented his house out to live with g/friend bought that and is still there but in the meanwhile helped buy his mums c house and i think thats disgusting buying 3 when you should only buy one when there are plenty of people crying out for a house no wonder there are a shortage of council houses if you get people like that
but we were council tenents for 10 years before we bought and its the best thing we ever did because its worth over double what we bought it for im not saying it hasnt been a struggle but you get through it0
