Two Properties and Council Tax - Advice Please?

The saying is really true. Nothing is certain but death and taxes.
Anyway I've inherited a property which means I now owe two houses. The second property is empty and I've received the 2009/2010 council tax for this house. What discounts am I entitled to for this property? I've already used up my "unoccupied status" 12 month exemption. I find it odd that single occupancy allows me a 25% discount but an unoccupied property means I am liable for the full tax amount.
All the council tax office can advise is to get rid of the property quick which in the current climate is something I'd rather not do. Also I'm finding it difficult to let the house as it's quite old and in need of updating.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

At minimum you could claim your inheritance as a "holiday home". Most Councils give a discount for this, typically 10%. Not much but it's something at least! :mad:0

I'm assuming that you are single, so it's not like you or your OH could move to the second house for Council tax purposes?
Surely whatever the condition someone would want to rent it, it's just a matter of how much rent they would be prepared to pay.0 -
Once the 6 months Class C exemption has been exhausted you will revert to the empty and unfurnished charge which is 100% charge for most areas now , if the property was furnished then would qualify for a minimum of 10% discount.
Unless the property becomes occupied your pretty much stuck with the full/nearly charge to pay.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
