cleaning cutlery

Sorry if this tip is allready here, did a search and couldnt find it anywhere.
Just cleaned all my silver cutlery by putting in a large casserole dish on the hob with balls of silver foil, and heating.
All the tarnish comes off on to the silver foil, then all you have to do is wipe the cutlery dry with a tea towel or soft cloth, so much better than spending hours with silver polish and no chemicals!
Hope this helps some one x :j

There is an even easier way and uses the wonderful soda crystals!
Line your washing up bowl with tin foil. Add 2 cupfuls of soda crystals. Pl;ace silver in bowl and add boiling water to complete cover. When bubbling stops you can take out the clean silver and buff with dry cloth. All the dirt sticks to the tinfoil. Brilliant.0 -
Will try that one too, thanks.Pawpurrs x0

A paste of salt and lemon juice also brings up silver cutlery nicely!!!!0

Not a clue where to post this but this is my "home" forum so I thought here!
I have been given some lovely cutlery, that was lying in a caravan for 15 years & the lady was going to throw out.
Its stainless steel - how best do I clean and sterilize it ?0 -
Well, if it's stainless steel I would have thought that really hot water, normal washing-up liquid and a scourer would suffice. If you really do want to sterilise them you could use some Milton or something similar but I think soaking them in a mild bleach solution would be OK and wouldn't stain them either.
Are they really manky?0 -
Hi Maradatha
Hmmm, i don't own stainless steel so can't advise myself.
Did find a much older thread which would still apply, and talks about using tinfoil which sounds very familiar to me!
cleaning cutlery
Cleaning stainless steel may also offer help and suggestion
I'll merge this later for you - do let us know how you get on
As with all tips, do exercise a little caution, maybe trying out a small sample first.
ZipA little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

They are spotless, but the OH is a picky virgo and wants them surgically clean ! LOL0
-
surgically clean !!!??? what have you been doing all this time? Assuming you have washed this cutlery just like all the rest , it will be fine. Otherwise fill a pan with water and boil the said cutlery for half an hour, that will do the trick. (the alternative is to tell the OH that you boiled it for half an hour...............)0
-
:A Oh how could you suggest anything like that ? You obviously know me well ..
I will give them a quick boil and then tell him to use them.. or his fingers. TY !
