"Soon you will be able to get 80pounds an hr to clean toilets or wash the floor in a factory in Tokyo.

Poor old UK, what happened how did we get to this?"

Isn't that obvious? Greed, illegal wars, misery at home and abroad

There is a fundamental problem with the system of training DHSS (or whatever it is now) staff. I know of people who were entitled to JSA but were wrongly turned away without even filling out a form.

If you have paid NI contributions for the correct tax years you are entitled to non-means tested JSA for 6 months. So if your partner works or you have big savings, it doesn't matter. make sure you are informed before you go into the office. The staff are overwhelmed with new claimants and you may be dealt with incorrectly.

Make sure you claim. It is your money. Don't be a mug.

Where exactly do you draw the line, would you refuse to call the fire brigade if your house was on fire ?

Do you just drive up and down the M6 toll road or walk around at night with a bag on your head to avoid taking advantage of street lighting ?

I was also amongst the last group of students to get a full grant - I've never once thought that there would come a point when my "debt" had been paid and xxxx the rest of society.

The biggest payout from the state to individuals is in the last few years of life for most people, unless they die suddenly/prematurely. If people have paid taxes and then refuse to take benefits when they need them, they are just f**king idiots to be frank. Humans are a social species, that requires organisation, which is the role of the democratic state. All this goes to show is that reading the right wing tabloids is bad for you, as you might believe the c**p about 'scroungers'..

I don't underdstand this. If people have paid in willingly and can afford not to take benefits why are they idiots? If one has need of them, one should claim, but if you don't, why should you?

Yes, the tax system exists to help those in need of financial aid. If you don't need it then you don't get it. It's always been like this and not some kind of savings account you can draw on when you're out of work.

You may be paying out tax and think you're not seeing direct benefits but you are. I presume you go to the doctor, have or will use a hospital, drive on the roads, used a school etc etc etc etc.

You pay tax so that society continues, so that everyone had a half decent life. If we all said we were unhappy 'feathering other people's nests' then there'd be no tax income and none of us would be better off than we are today.

I'm happy to pay into the system, perhaps I'll use it someday. If not then I'm happy to have helped someone else live a nicer life.
Yes I agree, but all I am saying is the rate should be less for s/employed with savings.
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

In reverse of course, s/e can be a company and not pay so much tax during 'good times'. :)

Interestingly you might apply the same argument to health care.
I have wilingly paid for the NHS ever since Ive started working. I would do everything in my power to go private for my healthcare, which I pay rather a lot for. I do have existing health conditions, and I therefore pay more for the privilidge. t. Does it make me an idiot for not wanting to "claim whats mine"
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Why? I don't understand the logic behind that...
