Buy something, work on it & sell at profit for on-call worker?

I need some extra income but I can't commit to things because I'm on call to go away.
I generally go away for work a month at a time.
I've thought about:
- doing up cars (haven't got the skills, but an option)
- doing up houses (not at the moment)
- repairing electronics (ebay is so competitive I can't see how the people repairing make any profit)
Any other ideas? -or anything I can search for for inspiration

Order of events: Banks lose our money -> get bailed out -> were inflating GBP to cover it -> now taxing us -> next will grab your funds direct -> things get really desperate to balance the books. What should have happened?: banks go bust and we lost our money much quicker

You say Ebay is too competitive but what market isn't in our "information age", online or offline. If anyone knew of an uncompetitive market I doubt they would share that information on a public forum as thats their profit margin gone straightaway.
You have to remember not everyone buys on price or otherwise there would be no high street with shops like Currys as you can find pretty much everything cheaper online. To be a succesful business today you need to offer something unique like offering a fantastic or quick service which a lot of the cheaper multi nationals dont offer!0 -
Commision only sales sounds like a good idea. Any suggestions?
What I'd like to figure out how to do is earn a commission for refering customers to a business. Or, for example, promoting a high street business online. How do I negoiate my commission? What about agreeing to a percentage based on increased sales only? There has to be some guides to this online.
The reason I ask about buying something to work on is because that something would be an asset.
RaksP: In terms of repairing electronics it can sometimes still be worth it. However, usually the margin is so low (less than £5 for a phone after parts) I came to the conclusion I was competing against warrenty repair fraudsters. I don't mean to say ebay is too competitive in everything, just that it became different in the area I tried.
My budget for a project would be £5,000 ideally, or upto £20,000 if it's a very sure thing.Order of events: Banks lose our money -> get bailed out -> were inflating GBP to cover it -> now taxing us -> next will grab your funds direct -> things get really desperate to balance the books.
