  • I have removed this post because the one person who I told about this outside the forum might be reading or already has. Too late now, if so, but editing this to protect my privacy more than anything in case that person HAS read this. Yes, I know it's confusing but I only just realized that may have been what's happened. Just going on that PM I had and everything. And because at least one other person apart from that one knows my username here now. Thought I was safe letting them know it but, not really so sure anymore.
Any help, opinions, views I may hold those are my own. Respect them as you would expect the same in return. Offered freely, is gleaned from a lifetime of experiences, knowledge gaining. Passed on to benefit others. I may be direct, ask you questions but those are to help you. Up to you if you choose to take it. I won't judge you either way.

    Hi Merlin.

Its understandable that you are very shook up by what happened. It must have been very frightening. I know I would really struggle to stay in my house alone after something like that. I see you were up on DFW until it began to get light and I think I would react just the same, not wanting to go to sleep in case it happened again.

Obviously I don't know what you could hear them saying but a significant proportion (majority maybe?) of burglaries in cities and probably towns too are heroin/drug addicts who are only interested in stealing relatively small items (phones, laptops, wallets, cameras, mp3s) from peoples hallways or living rooms to sell on to fund their habit. They are usually in and out of place within a minute or 2 and would not venture upstairs.
It was probably just bad luck that they picked on your house. Is there anything you could do that would make it more secure or make you feel more secure? Better locks or extra bolts on the door? An alarm system (or one of those fake alarm boxes- which are significantly cheaper?). Would you consider / be able to have a dog? Or just a sign saying 'Beware of the dog'.

Are you friendly enough with any of your neighbours to talk to them about it? Find out if anyone else was targeted?

These people heard you call the police and so are very unlikely to come back. I know that doesn't stop other pond life trying but remember burglary in an occupied house is relatively uncommon. Do you leave any light on at night that can be seen? It might be worth doing so so people realise the house is occupied. Could it be that they thought no-one was in?

Sorry for the long post - I expect you have thought of all these things already- and sorry I can't think of anything more useful to say.

    Take care of yourself.

Or how about putting a photograph of whatever you are now keeping by your bed in your front window? Maybe that will scare them off?
