i guess a cash option will be needed- perhaps a loyalty card scheme giving a discount (load up with £10, get £11 of goods?) might work-

just scan and go (like, or even using the Oyster?)
Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)

I used to use an automated DVD rental machine. I topped up my card at the counter whenever I wanted to then used the card and my PIN number in the machine and when I'd watched the film I posted it back into the machine and was charged for the time I'd had it (in 2 hour, 8 hour, 1 day and 1 week increments I think). My card also operated the lock on the door of the shop so I could let myself in to return or rent a DVD at midnight.
The shop also was an internet cafe thing, where you can rent their computer and use the internet access but that part of the shop was sealed off at night when there was no staff. There was staff in during all usual trading hours though.

The downsides were that I could only top up when there was a member of staff in, and that it didn't feel very safe at night even though it was well lit and was card access, not just open to everyone.

It was great for being able to borrow a film watch it and take it straight back and pay pittance though!

In case you're wondering, I don't use it anymore because I moved house, stopped being a student and it didn't work for me anymore.

foreign correspondent makes an interesting point about international equivalents. I've never seen a shop of machines, but there is a massive vending maching at Brussels Midi station; I assume it is used mainly when the shops are closed, but I had to have a closer look as I have never seen such a variety of items in a single machine. It is probably about 2 metres tall and 3 wide.
  • The amount it costs to rent/hire/maintain the machines is very high - security would be an issue as they are easily broken into - so your insurance would be very high!!!

You would need someone on site if you wanted to sell condoms and age restricted items etc....
Not really comping any more as too ill - but hoping to win £1000+ in 2017 in cash prizes - watch this space!
