Possibly, depends when you received your last pay from your employment.

Sometimes, if you hand in your P45 to Job Centre, before the end of the tax year, they issue any refund either when you sign off or at the end of the tax year, whichever is sooner.

In most cases you will need to wait until the end of the tax year, ask for confirmation from the jobcentre of taxable benefit received and send these details to your tax office asking them to check if you are due a repayment. It may also be worth sending in your copy of the P45 from your employer with the repayment claim.

ok so if a repayment was due and you had failed to find work would you declare it & lose benefit ?

I don't really know anything about jobseekers allowance. I hadn't really thought about it but I suppose a rebate is income.

If i was totally honest, if I received a rebate from the tax office and I wasn't specifically asked, by thejobcentre, if I had received any other income, I probably wouldn't offer this information.

No ... it's a partial refund of (overpaid) tax so it's not classed as income.

But if the redundancy is recent ..... you're very close to the tax year end (5.4.09) and any refund is going to be constrained by that fact. As any 'credit' for tax paid this year is effectively guillotined at that point.

I asked the Job Centre today about a tax refund and they told me they are not the Inland Revenue! I thought you gave the P45 to the JC and they dealt with the Inland Revenue regarding the refund?

I was made redundant at the beginning of January so I guess I should be due back a partial refund. Is there a way of working out an estimate of what I should be due back?

    Thanks :)
