my husband and I are expecting our first baby in september, he is currently around 9grand in debt and we have no way of clearing it, please dont suggest ccs or the likes as we have tried and most wont touch us, as 2 of the debts are rent and council tax, which they wont touch, also when we did approach them all they said was download there forms etc whcih w did, we wrote to the debt companies to be ignored!
We currently get £800 a month one income, cannot get help with ct or hb, but have some wtc, whcih is included in above sum. out of this we have to pay £400 rent (including arrears) £150 council tax (including arrears) leavin us 250 a month for debts, food, and prepareing for baby!
His debts without ct and rent are 5 grand, most compainies are demandin £30 each and wont lesson it despite us sending finacial statmenst!
would brankruptcy be an answer? the house is in my name the debts are in his, its council would we lose it!?
I really want the last questions answerred more then anything, but any other advise gratefully received
thanks

Please tone down your font size and colour. To make it easier for people to read.Any help, opinions, views I may hold those are my own. Respect them as you would expect the same in return. Offered freely, is gleaned from a lifetime of experiences, knowledge gaining. Passed on to benefit others. I may be direct, ask you questions but those are to help you. Up to you if you choose to take it. I won't judge you either way.

Hi bankruptcy would be a very big thing to do for this amount of debt, particularly since neither the rent of CT debts would necessarily be cleared.
You do need to get some proper advice from a debt charity.
The reason they will not take you on a DMP is that you have rent and CT debts which are priority debts and until those are cleared, they cannot consider you.
if the house is in your name, then the rent debt is yours, not OH. The CT is probably joint liability and you would have to pay it, if by some miracle the Council have not already got a liability order.
It is not for us to tell OH what to do, but come April there is new legislation coming through whch offers other alternatives to bankruptcy.
In the very short-term,
1. If the baby is due in September, can you not get some work even temporary, to help the situation.
2. Check out the maternity and sure start grants.
3. Once the baby is born, your benefits will increase considerably, so it may worht waiting until you know what the financial situation is. Look at www.entitledto.com and work out what you will get.
4. In the interim, you need to pay each creditor £1 per month.
They can shout as much as they like but that is the meximum you shopuld be paying. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

I know it's more the debt advice you need, but have you seen if your entitled to the sure start grant of £500 (for baby things)As you can claim it before baby is born (think it's a bit early for you yet to apply considering your due date. Also there is a new grant of £190.The sure start helped us buy the things we needed and doesn't have to be paid back.It would help you prepare for babes:female:Our 2 gorgeous little girls born 2006 and 2010
