OS money saving ways to beat cancer!

Options
Hi guys,

I have been popping up a few times in the last few months, but have never posted anything like this before. I hope to get some useful answers.

A few weeks ago I posted a thread asking the rest of you advice on moving back to my partner's parents house for a year to save money for a deposit to buy.

I was a bit dubious to say the least as we had lived together for a year and I enjoyed our own space and so on.

It was only last week that we found out my partners mum has been diagnosed with cancer! A shock to us all as she is young (46), healthy and leads a healthy lifestyle.

Now I am not so worried about moving back to them as I want to do all I can to help her.

Anyway, the reason why I am posting is to ask a few questions.

Firstly we are going to send her to have pivate treatment and this is not negotiable. The waiting list on the NHS is far too long. The only people who work in the household are my partner and his dad, (they run their own business).

I have researched many different types of foods that are meant to help with fighting cancerous cells. Mainly fruit and vegetables and chiken livers. As we all know organic fruit and veg is the not the cheapest.

So coming to the end of my rant (is there anybody still reading?) I just wondered if anybody else has been through this and if anybody had any more genious ideas on how to save the pennies during this hard and tough time?

Thanks for reading, I needed to get this off my chest :)

  • Hi There

Sorry to hear about your partners mum.

Unfortunately, we are unable to give medical advice on this forum, but if you contact either her GP practice or oncologist, they will be able to give you lots of info on what foods, nutrients etc she would benefit from.

I have always found the NHS very good in situations like this, but if you are able to go private then that is your choice and TBH I dont blame you if they have waiting lists for cancer treatment.

To cut back, I suggest meal planning and buying just what you need. Make a list of what you all have in and base meals around this to start off with and work from there.

    Hugs.

Definately meal plan - saves me money as I only buy what I need rather than wandering aimlessly around the supermarket.
Can you spare the time to try and grow your own veg? If done without pesticides then that's got to be better for you. You can grow in pots and containers if you don't want to sacrifice garden space.
sorry to hear your partners mum's news but with support like you behind her I am sure she'll come back fighting.

I think anyone diagnosed with cancer gets a non means tested benefit to enable them to eat a good diet. I think one of the health care workers you will encounter will be able to advise.
Its a very noble gesture on your part, good luck to your family.

Anyone with cancer might find it worthwhile contacting MacMillan for some advice on what benefits can be claimed etc. They have advisers all around the country

Well....I can see that your partners mum has one of the most valuable assets she can have in her fight with cancer - emotional support.

I'm sure she thoroughly appreciates having such a considerate "daughter-in-law". Good luck and hope things work out for you all.
  • Nine years ago I had op for colon cancer followed by 30 weeks of chemo. I bought a juicer and used it every day. Every month my blood tests were A1 (so nurse said) and felt ok and had the energy to go back to work. I did not use organic fruit but that would be even better. It was the op and chemo that saved my life but the good fresh fruit juice gave me the energy I needed at the time. I would not give anyone medical advice but eating well will do no harm.

    Hi there Paige

When I lost my sis to cancer last year -I got this book -so I could look into what foods to increase in my diet to help keep me well

    http://www.dbponline.co.uk/book_preview.asp?b_id=84

It really is a good book and covers all sorts of ailments and illnesses.. I got it from a "bookworks" store for about £4.... so it may be worth looking out for.. and it is listed on amazon ....

Sorry to hear about that. However, as PP says, asking for and giving medical advice isn't allowed on these fora, so I'm going to lock this thread.

Hope your MIL gets the best treatment.
