Advise needed from dentist

Hello,

Just got back from the dentist, but was so nervous forgot to ask some questions which I hope can be answered here.

The dentist said I've got the beginnings of decay on my wisdom tooth and gave me a fluoride mouth wash and said not to eat/drink for 1 hour after use so to allow product to work.

Now, would it be ok to use last thing at night and then do you not rinse out with water? Is it ok to have stuff sitting on teeth all night?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Jess

That's a good time to use it.

That's how I recommend my patients to do it.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

It might be even better to use it at a different time of day completely since your teeth should already be getting fluoride from your toothpaste at that time (which also shouldnt be rinsed away). I would advise to use after lunch or early evening if possible whilst avoiding eating or drinking afterwards. Find a time that suits you and stick with it as it will become more of a habit that way.

That's one for your own dentist. Ring them up.

OK, as a quick extension to this, do/should people really not rinse their mouth with water after cleaning their teeth? I don't think I could stand the taste and surely you'd only end up swallowing it which I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to do.

You should spit out the excess so there really isnt much to be swallowing. If you rinse after brushing you are rinsing away the fluoride which defeats the purpose of using a fluoride toothpaste.

Ive never rinsed after brushing. I often wondered why you always got water glasses in hotel bathrooms and they are sold in shops as part of bathroom sets

I suspect I'm unlikely to change my habits at this point, it just seems weird to leave toothpaste in your mouth, afterall you're told to rinse your mouth when you've been seen by the dentist.

Thats cos hes left nasty bits of scale, plaque and perhaps bits of filllings in your mouth which you really dont want to be crunching on (oh and perhaps a bit of bloody saliva if doing a deep clean)
