Storing shop bought fruit and veg

Options
I went to a wholesaler today and they have big bags of onions, peppers and apples and I was wondering if I can store these at home under the conditions you would store homegrown produce, or do you think now they have travelled and been in refridgerated warehouses they won't store well for as long?

  • Hi, onions should last a good while and if starting to go a bit soft/mouldy I chop them up but in individual freezer bags and freeze. Can be bunged straight from freezer into stews/ curries/ casseroles. Peppers you can chop and best frozen in strips in an open tray. Once frozen can be put into individual bags to add to cooking. Apples may be best to use in cooking when starting to go off. Pretty hardy fruit should keep for a few weeks in cool, dry place. You can always make jam/chutney or puree to add puds/yogurt ice cream etc. HTH

I find that shop produce doesn't last as long as that which I've grown ;)

I'll add this to the exisiting thread - Storing fruit and veg later :D

We use loads of fruit and veg. I bought these, and it was the best thing I ever did!

They also sell them in Asda (JML.) They are not cheap, but you can use them over and over again, and they pay for themselves in fruit/salad that actually gets eaten instead of thrown out.

I have a huge head of broccoli (oooh, that sounds weird)....... in the fridge :D and I just take bits off it for salads. It has been in there for three weeks, and is still as crunchy and green as the day it was bought.

I can't recommend these bags highly enough.
