Name Change after Marriage

Hi,

A straight forward query.

What do you do after getting married to change your surname officially. Is there a legal procedure to follow or any government agency that we need to inform?

I assume we send letters to banks etc with a copy of marriage certificate?

And any idea how to get a passport surname changed?

Thanks for any information.

2nd links seems to say you need to apply for a fresh passport, to match your new 'legal' name..?

With regard to banks, I'd have thought you just need to show them your marriage certificate and fill in a change of name form with your new signature.

When I finished my PhD I changed my title from Miss to Dr (which some people think is snooty and unnecessary but it does change how people deal with you, which is a good thing when you look as young for your age as I do).

Anyway, I just showed them a copy of my certificate and completed the relevant form. Halifax were happy just to see my new bank card from Barclays. The woman on the desk said that they will accept a change which has already been verified by another British bank (don't know if this is the case for all banks though...).

That was my sentiment - the experience was 'character building' to say the least! OH got his PhD before I did and he still hasn't changed his title on some of his accounts, though titles don't matter so much in his line of work (psychologist) as in mine (academia).
