Some months ago I had letters addressed to the occupier etc from McK H whom everyone appears to despise, and I guess they were chasing an extremely old debt that I had back in 2000/2001 with M&S Financial. A couple of days ago I got a letter from SCOTCALL, headed Doorstep Collection Notice, dated 9 March and received five days later, giving me 7 days to call them. Well from reading all the posts I aint about to call them, will only deal in writing. It does however mention that a field agent will call (good luck to him as even my friends cant get me to answer the door due to broken bell!!)
My Question though is this -
their letter says they are acting on behalf of M&S Money - Never heard of them unless its a new name for M&S Financial. Does this mean it is still a 'legal debt'?
I have no paperwork for M&S as numerous moves and years have passed, so how can I tell/find out when I last communicated/paid anything towards the debt?
I am sure that this was passed to a DCA (Moorcroft or similar) years ago and somewhere communication lines ceased/payments ceased, does this mean the debt has been sold on again
The bablance shown is £3315 on Scotcalls letter, I have some money saved, should I offer them a one off full and final settlement of the debt they are chasing, and if so how much would you offer?
Sorry if this is a bit long winded, but really dont want this to drag on and on as it has taken me over 5 years to get my life back on track only for this old debt (which I had forgotten about until a few months ago) to pop up and set me back again. I am not trying to avoid my obligations but think its been six years or more since I had any communications/paid anything on this debt, but can cough up something but not all (dont have all) and wondering the right approach path to go. Whats this about CCA? where do I find it?
Thanks for listening to my rambling, I hope if makes sense

Well, I think the most sensible thing would be right now is to ask yourself:
Is this YOUR debt? You say the occupier, bit general don't you think and not address to you directly?
So, before we venture any further is it your debt?A couple of days ago I got a letter from SCOTCALL, headed Doorstep Collection Notice, dated 9 March and received five days later,
I really don't think it's wise putting the date on here because DCA's DO read these forums!Well from reading all the posts I aint about to call them, will only deal in writing. Highly unlikely, it's to put the wind up you. To MAKE you call them. And if they do show up you gonna let them in, a complete stranger off the street? A stranger who has no more rights than a fence post to come to your home, demand money from you which you may or may not owe? Simply don't open the door to anyone you don't know. Note their movements, whether they try to ask your neighbours. The bablance shown is £3315 on Scotcalls letter, I have some money saved, should I offer them a one off full and final settlement of the debt they are chasing, and if so how much would you offer?
Under no circumstances, as this debt may not even be yours! You said 'occupier'. Sounds to me like they are fishing and do not know if you live there. If you provide more info then that gives people on MSE more to work with. Starting first with is this your debt? You've mentioned you lost the paperwork.Any help, opinions, views I may hold those are my own. Respect them as you would expect the same in return. Offered freely, is gleaned from a lifetime of experiences, knowledge gaining. Passed on to benefit others. I may be direct, ask you questions but those are to help you. Up to you if you choose to take it. I won't judge you either way.

You mentioned 6 years ago. Very good chance it's statute barred, then. In which case that's why you need to reply with some certainty over whether this is your debt or not. Because if you acknowledge it, and it IS yours, then out goes the ssb thing instantly.
CCA's I wouldn't bother with right now, again for the SB reason. If you give more info others here can help.

A check of your credit record may indicate the date of the last payment. Or your bank records? If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0

Thnaks to all who replied. Let me try and clear up some misunderstandings. McK H wrote to the occupier some months back and yes they even went to neighbours but got nowhere. I did have a debt some years back and although I have bank statements etc, I cant recall who the DCA was back then. Took me enough time/strength to keep head above water living on £100 a month (food, car tax etc) as all the rest of my wage went to clearing debts and the normal utility bills. You suggest not sending a CCA but how will I know if the debt is SB without contacting them? I received the letter from Scotcall in my married name, one that I have not used for years now, but I did last year check my credit record and they have both my married and maiden name on there, guess from paying off other debts etc and the electoral roll. Think thats how they got my address even if wrong name. Is it worth doing the credit record again and see if I can figure out where the M&S debt shows and will this actually show me when last payment was made i.e. will it show any payments made to a DCA? Sorry for going on again but I hope I have made things a bit clearer. Sorry forgot yes I did have a debt with M&S some years ago (trying to be careful with dates given that you say DCA's watch the boards) so yes it is my debt.
Thanks

Morning, I wonder if anyone could peruse my response to all who left comments for me as I really would like to bottom this thing out sooner rather than later as it is now starting to prey on my mind and I am starting agin to reach the point of not wanting to go out of my door in case the field agent is waiting. Would another check of my credit record assist me or open up the way for them to verify where I am etc. Do I settle with them given I dont know if it is SB or notThnaks to all who replied.
