Only if you tell them or you have put them down for a reference.
I dont think that there is anything other way they can find out really?? Could be wrong tho!

Is there any obligation to tell your first employer if you start up as self-employed in your spare time? I'm not thinking about any conflicts of interest here by the way.

Check your contract. I had a job before that required written permission from my employer if I had a second job!
