Also is there an age limit to buying shares as im 16

I am going to look into shares a bit more before i buy any but if i find somewhere that sells them i can get a good idea of how much i can spend.

The cheapest place is to open a halifax sharebuilder acount. It costs just £1.50 to buy, but it has to be on a set day of the month (choose from 1 of 4). It says you have to put £25 per month in, but this can be taken out again if you wish. Also, you could use it as a kind of avings account as it earns 5% interest on any un-invested cash!
  • thanks for that kev, i will look into opening one of those accounts and the interest sounds a great idea. if anyone has other reccomendations i would like to hear them.

    Thanks

I have used iwebsharedealing.co.uk for quite a while. They charge £10 per transaction and I can highly recommend them.

Do just remember, in the true spirit of moneysaving, if you have your shares in what's called a "nominee" account, which the vast majority are, you will not actually hold the certificates, and will therefore not be eligible for shareholders perks. These can often be well worth having. You could look at FasTrade for a comparison, perhaps, but there are a few others.
    Above all, good luck.

where does the 5% come from?

I'm reading the terms & conditions and cant find it anywhere. Only reference to interest paid on cash balances i can see is http://www.halifax.co.uk/sharedealing/intrates.shtml and that says only 1%. If its 5% that'll be the kicker and i'll be signing tomo! Been thinking about it for a while.

    Thanks

Hi, i work in the financial services industry so just wanted to point out that until you reach the age of 18 you are classed as a minor and will not be able to hold shares in your name. However, your parents could hold them in their name and designate your account with your name for example, until you reach 18. It is then a simple process them to register them in your name only. You will still be able to receive dividends etc as the account can be mandated to your bank account.

    Hope this helps
  • Hello

I have been using Interactive Investor (https://www.iii.co.uk), they charge £10 to buy/sell and £15 for US markets.

There loads of info on their website, you can also do CDF and Spreed betting too.
