Changing foreign currency to GBP

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums so apologies if I have posted this in the wrong place! I am after some advice.
My wife is american, and when we got married 3 years ago we were given a considerable amount of cash in US dollars as a wedding gift from numerous people.
Up until now, we have used the money as holiday cash when we go to the US, but we would now like to exchange the rest into GBP.
What / where is the best place to do this?
We have looked at various banks and the post office, but they offer terrible exchange rates.
Any advice would be greatfully received.
