Hi everyone.
I recently lost my job and just cannot afford to pay my loan and living costs anymore. I owe LLoyds bank 7000 pounds. With no chance of getting a job here i have decided to go back home to Malaysia. I was wondering what should i do about the loan? Some of my friends told me they know someone who lefy the country and nothing happened to them. But I was hoping to get a job back home, although the money will be alot less, but the living costs will also be almost nothing. I have worked out that maybe i could pay 40 pounds a month to LLoyds. Right now i pay nearly 220. Does anyone know if they will accpet this? If they dont then i guess i will have no choice and just leave with no forwarding address etc . Any advice much appreciated.

I would advise contacting nationaldebtline or citizens advice.
As already mentioned, there isn't alot they can do other than try to seize any assets you have in the UK. If you have no assetts then if you do not intend living in the UK again, there is not really anything they can do.
The rules for debts abroad were changed in December 2008, but i think this only applied to Europe. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91
Dad Gift 6k ¦ Savings & Inv Tst: £2,500
Loan 10k: £0 ¦ Dad 5.5k: £2,270 ¦ LTSB: £0 ¦ RBS: £0 ¦ Virgin £0 ¦ Egg £0
Total Owed: £2,270 (+6k) 11/08/20110 -

One of my friends is in the same situation. She has got a loan of 8000 which she got from her bank and also credit card bill of 1500. However she is about to get married to her future husband and therefore going to change her name and address. Any chance she can be chased up?? She intents to open new bank account in a different bank with her new name. And moving in to her husbands house as soon as they are married.
Any advice will be much appreciated

they will be after her in no time, as her credit records will be linked. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

Could you please expand on how her credit records will be linked? Also she has no intention of appliying for any credit in future so how would it link?? Sorry to be a pain, I am not very good in all these financial matters and don't know how it all works.0 -

My OH is Canadian and lives here - he has been tracked down.
Remember that Canada and the UK have a mutual agreement where debts can be pursued through the courts (can't remember what it's called).

Because you can't open a bank account without details of who you are and 6 years of passing addresses and name changes etc will show up on her credit report.
It will all be there in black and white.
She's an idiot if she seriously thinks otherwise."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
if she has any sort of financial dealing, including having her name on a bank account, then her ID check will link her maiden and married names and past addresses.
Companies als use people like J2 solutions who us marriage records etc to trace those who have new names. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

What if she applies for a new bank account with her new name now (when she is still paying the loan off) . She told me that Barclays does not ask you for your maiden name. And regarding past addresses-she was a student 3 years ago and had loads of addresses since 2001 to 2006 (living in the house of 5) where there has been millions of students since she's gone. So how will they be able to tell if it is the same person??0 -

Then she really is stupid.
Let her get on with it - she'll fall at the first hurdle and if she thinks she can run away from the loan, then let her - she'll be racking up the late payments, then defaults, then CCJs in no time."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
