Buying Items In The Shop Sales & Selling On

Hi :)

Just after Christmas I bought some items in the sales, mainly Monsoon clothes and managed to sell them on ebay at a profit. I don't know whether anyone else is doing or has done this. I imagine there is money to be made, though it is hard work finding the stuff, especially with so many shops now closing and also because at the moment the sales are not that great.

I worked on the basis of buying it, leaving all the tags on, putting it straight on ebay and if it didn't sell, then returning it to the shop and getting a refund.

Has anyone else tried this or had any success with it? I've not made much money, a few pounds here and there, it all helps, though like I say, depending on whether you can get access to some decent stuff.

McFilly :)

  • If the sale items are very good, it is worth doing it. I find selling discontinued make up the best as many people bid high on these.

You cannot keep taking goods back to a shop and expecting a refund. Most places will replace the item or give you a credit note. Also there is only so many times you can return an item before they get suspicious.

Don't forget as well that you are trading and therefore need to register with HMRC within 3 months otherwise you may have problems. Selling brand new tagged clothes is likely to be picked up as well, so register ASAP.

I bought a couple of pairs of craghopper trousers from a local shop very cheaply (£3/pair!) and then sold them on ebay - I bought them with the intention of selling them - and I did so, at a profit (sold each pair for £11ish) and that paid my ebay fees for the month.

I wouldn't go to the effort of doing it regularly though - but if it works for you, then why not....

Something that does seem to sell well is plus sized clothes - I sometimes buy stuff (size 24+) from the charity shops and sell it on - but again, I wouldn't make a special effort.

I don't know about HMRC and stuff like that - but I would agree that you can't rely on shops giving you a refund. If there is nothing wrong with the goods, then you're not legally entitled to a refund.

    Good Luck tho!! :j

I am kind of for this and against it. I don't see a problem if it's something in a charity shop that someone will no doubt come along and buy to sell anyway - that kind of thing I don't have a problem with. Or things at car boot sales etc.
But what I do have a problem with is people going to big sales i.e Lush, Boots etc and filling trolleys with literally EVERYTHING. I think that is very unfair and greedy and nobody should be encouraged to do it - enough do it already! Many people go looking for a few bits and pieces and get left empty handed because the 'professionals' had cleared it out within 2 minutes.
This isn't directed at you personally OP, don't worry, just my general opinion. :)

I know that some people do this, my sister and I bought dresses for our nieces to wear as flowergirls from Marks and Spencers last week, they were £2.50 each (bargain!!!!), they're now on Ebay for up to £9.99 each so it's something people do
