Jaw cramps while at Dentist - Help!! Arghhh

Hi, Toothsmith or anyone. I have terrible jaw cramp when I have to open my mouth for long periods, my dentists says it cos I have a muscular mouth!!

In 2 weeks I am having a crown fitted and the first appointment is for 40 mins. I am dreading the pain of my jaw cramping up. My dentist has now learnt that when I shout he removes his fingers smartish!!

Has anyone any remedies for this ailement, anything I can do before hand to help. It is so painful any help would be nice. Thanks!

Hi there, you could ask your dentist if he has some props, these are like rubber blocks which are inserted on the opposite side of the mouth from where the work is to be carried out and hold the jaw open without the need for the muscles to do the work, therefore avoiding tiredness and cramp.

I have the same problem, it's really painful.
My dentist uses a prop (as described by Teerah) it seems to work because although your mouth is held open by the prop you are effectively biting it so the muscles can relax. I've had root canal work for 90 mins without a break using a prop, and I can't hold my mouth wide open for long enough for a check up without it...
