Advice on a new bike

After a bit of advice really. I'm after a new bike, probably mountain bike more so than road bike as I'll be doing a bit of both.

I have a budget of £150-£200, obviously less is better! I want something that is easy to take apart, so the front wheel can come off with no tools, and possibly the back as well.

I've had a look at Halfords, and they have some heavy reduction on Apollo bikes, from £300 to £199 etc.

Any advice appreciated!

    Hi

IMO £150 to £200 is not enough money to buy a decent bike.
The Apollo range from Halfords is rubbish. The lower end of bikes in Halfords are all pretty poor quality.

I recently bought a new mountain bike. Bargain 2008 model.
Fantastic bike, great value, comfortable to ride, and will last for years without spending a fortune on it.

Whilst out with a friend today, we swapped bikes for a while, so i could adjust his gears. He has a Halfords cheapo ! The two minutes I spent on it were enough to remind me never to buy one of those !!

Do yourself a favour, get something better, your bum won't regret it, although your wallet might:D

Also, received wisdom seems to be that you probably won't get decent suspension parts on a sub-£300 bike (and it may be necessary to spend considerably more than that to do so).

On the other hand, it's perfectly possible to get a good hybrid for that sort of money from Ridgeback, Marin, GT or Giant. Fine for commuting, cyclepaths, and moderate unpaved surfaces.
