His sister is getting married, and wants us to attend her wedding down under.
How do I explain to her that we probably won't be able to afford to travel to her wedding

do you not fancy going back, as you lived there previously you could catch up with old friends? there is nothing to stop you saving and having a baby when you get back, just think of it as an holiday enjoy yourself while you can , life is too short good luck whatever you decide x (if you really cannot afford it just tell her straight, theres nothing worse than in laws!)0

Why are you doing the explaining, what does your other half want to do?? Do you agree with each other. Could you halve cost and if he wants to go tell him to go with your good wishes. Not being critical just popping up ideas.Good luck to all who enter competitions.0

What could you feasibly afford and be willing to spend? There's a budget airline now doing flights to Malaysia and onward to Australia, so if you could find cheap enough flights and could afford to go without feeling resentful it might be worth it.
If not, tell your partner to talk to her. It's his family and he should do it.Organised Birthdays and Christmas: Spend So Far: £193.75; Saved from RRP £963.76

It is a very expensive flight to get there, maybe you could offer to pay for a video of the proceedings (if thats any cheaper!)Some people feel the rain...others just get wet0

The thing is it is your sister in law,but his sister.:D
How strong are his ties, when did you last visit. How much notice has she given you? is it likely a visit is going to be possible later?(when a mortgage/baby factor in the plans).
Do you like her enough to want to get past any problems.....;)
Lots questions only the two of you can answer. Given enough notice,I would try to go,and make it a family time for both of you0 -
If you would like your SIL to see your predicament why don't you offer her a honeymoon at yours? Schedule a week of treats topped off by a party ("reception") and treat the pair like royalty, by all means, but in order to take advantage of this generous offer she and OH will need to find the money for the tickets.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I was in a similar situation last year. Got made reduant in Jan was expected back home in Oz for my brothers wedding at Easter, also we had just bought a house and my husband had just changed jobs... basically could not have been worse timing.
I ended up borrowing the money (got a loan and just paid it back!) and went alone. Looking back it was a really horrible time, but cant have ever imagined not going! Year later defo did the right thing!!0
