new glasses - one lens thicker than the other

I collected my new glasses yesterday where my prescription is as follows: -
Right
Sphere = -100
Cylinder = -050
Axis = 10

Left eye

Sphere = - 300
Cylinder = -050
Axis = 5

Ive noted this evening that the lens in the left eye (which I think is my worse eye (the numbers above mean nothing to me!) looks like its popping out the frame but it could be that because of the strength of the lens, it needs to be a bigger / fatter lens as opposed to the lens for my right eye?

Its not so noticeable at the bottom but very noticable at the top.

would that be the case for a pair of glasses to have one lens bigger than the other???

    left lens needs to be more powerfull than the right therefore it has more edge thickness.

  • yup, the prescription for your left eye is 2 Dioptres stronger than the right eye, so the lens will be thicker. :)

    If your left lens is thicker because the eye is weaker then you should either pay for extra thin lenses or choose a frame that hides the thickness e.g. smaller frames.

    I have every sympathy because I know what its like to have thick lenses and I have always paid for thinner ones - I once paid £400 for a set of Zeiss lenses which were incredibly thin but I am no longer allowed to have glass lenses and tend to get my spectacles from the eye hospital where I still have to pay but a lot less and I get a better choice of frame.

    My lens prescription is VERY strong for both eyes and I have to pay a small fortune to get my lenses "thinned down" (ie. in a super thin lens), but it is definitely worth the money to not look like i'm wearing milk bottle glass in my nice frames!!
  • -3.00 is not terribly strong, there is no need for the OP to have the lens thinned unless they are concerned about the cosmetic appearance of the spectacles, or unless they are quite heavy.

    thanks for all your replies. You have put my mind at rest so thank you very much.

    My last two pairs of glasses came from Vision Express and were petite small framed oval glasses.

    This time, I have gone to a small independent local optician where there were no bogof deals :confused: but I got a much friendlier (We care about you) service.

    The frames I have gone for are a lot chunkier than I am used to and the frame side bars much thicker so the chunkier lens in my left eye is not really noticeable.

    as my lens in my old glasses were the same, i wasnt expecting that I would have one lens bigger than the other!
  • Larger lenses and chunkier frames do mean that thicker lenses are a lot more noticeable! In the 1980s where glasses were as big as shoulder pads, I had a permanent mark on my left cheek because the lens stuck out behind the frame...
