Depends if it is for a boy or girl and how close you are to the family.

I have a boy and girl and we recieved necklaces/ bangles(dd), money banks( silver shaped like pig, train carousel), a holder for the certificate, money, lots of books ( we are avid readers and the godparents wanted to start a library for the kids growing up but not very traditional) photo frame, a set for my first lock of hair and my first tooth and money/ cheques and a savings bonds. Also a silver tankard which I love but is up in the loft and cost a lot of money as it was personalied with my son's details including a clock with the hands set at the time he was born ( from MIL)

I have highlighted my favourites. I would suggest that you speak to the parents H Samuels normally carry stuff that is suitable but the parents may be like us and not want all the traditional stuff as we have enough clutter/ ornaments already.

    Hope this helps Upsy x
  • Hi, we are going to a christening in a couple of weeks - two little girls. I bought them tiny silver star necklaces from the jewellery.tv sale - they are from the D for diamond range - the diamonds are miniscule but they are beautifully boxed and, I thought, a really unusual gift. They were 50% off at £12 each.

I got a trinket box personalised on ebay - I got a wooden one but they also had silver - you choose personalisation and it was about a tenner. I'd have liked that for my daughter as it's something she can use as an adult

Altho' I'm not religious the parents of my godchildren are (obviously since they were Christened!).
Anyway, as a Christening gift I bought an Illustrated Childrens Bible.
    Just a thought.
  • Have a look on www.beatrixpotteremporium.com. It might give you a bit of inspiration. I love all things Beatrix Potter and whenever we are in the Lakes I always call in their shop in Bowness (leaving OH in their cafe so he doesn't know how much I am spending!) I bought my great-niece's Christening gift there and always stock up on items for up-and-coming children's birthdays. They do mail-order too.

For my grandaughters first birthday i bought her a charm bracelet so i can add to it each year,it was a traditional one now you can get pandora ones which have some lovely charms.Chamilia range have Disney charms,i wish i had seen these before i got a traditional one.I think its better to get things they can wear when they are older i have got a bangle i had when i was christened and wished i could wear it now,and i think those silver plated things are useless they go discoloured eventually and at least a bracelet is a work in progress.

how about a set of coins for the year of birth, you can get them from the post office and they come in presentation boxes and vary in price from £10 to £30 odd, nice little keepsake for years to come....I got one for a mate's son's christening last year...hth
  • I am about to become Godmother to my cousins daughters and I have bought them both a silver heart locket and had them engraved with their initial. It cost me £21 for both lockets, chains and engraving.
