is it ham or pork?

Options
I'm so sorry for being totally thick sounding, but i;m not sure what i've cooked!!!
as it is just myslef and my DS, who both eat everything and anything, i decided to make an effort to buy cheaper cuts of meat. This week my butcher had pork hocks for £2 so i have put one in my slow cooker today. i soaked it last night as though it was ham/bacon type meat, but when i just checked on it, it's not that colour. it looks more like pork??

Silly question but will it taste like ham or pork??? just thinking what to buy to go with it!

Ham is cured pork ;) Sounds like you've got pork. Why not cut a small piece off to taste, then you should know :D

Pork hocks are pork and ham hocks are ham.

The hock is the lower part of the leg of a pig - the ankle really. Ham/gammon will be the colour of bacon and salty.

Bacon is also cured pork but it is the back or belly rather than the leg.

My auntie used to roast Pork Shanks/Hocks (same thing) for a mid-week roast meal with creamed potatoes and veg.
  • My gran used to cook a "hock" when I was very small and I used to have it warm on bread and butter, with vinegar applied to the outside of the bread - it was delicious. I never thought of whether it was ham or pork before, but I remembered that she used to boil it on the stove. So do you think it was a ham hock? I shall need to know for when I go to buy one and how much do you think it would cost?

    Thanks in advance

  • Morrisons gammon/bacon hocks are £1.49 each.

I bought two yesterday, bowl of consentrated stock is in the freezer ready for soup, along with one hock (the other's in the fridge for sarnies)

I paid £1.79 each for mine but they were HUGE ones - from Gabbott's Farm Shop, Leigh.
  • Hey thanks everyone - that sounds great and cheap. Must put it on my shopping list.

    Thanks again
