Expenses while training

I've just been interviewed for a job and been informed that while training I would be paid £30 cash per day as "expenses" over the period of two weeks. Once I start work properly then my salary would be paid into my bank and I would be given a proper wage slip.

The implication was that I could continue to sign on if I wished - I am not posting to query that as I know it is illegal and don't plan on doing it.

However should the company be paying expenses in that way without seeing receipts? Should this money be paid in cash without tax being deducted, and do I have to declare it?

Thanks

the company should be asking for receipts to back up your expenses claim. Riound sum allowances like this are taxable, but as you are allowed to earn £116 pw before tax is due, there is no liability.
