Managers should have been jailed IMHO !

I disagree - there should be NO LAW against selling out of date food as long as they offer a good reduction.

    After all - caveat emptor!!!

    Roll on the bargains...

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
While the article only mentions the sell by dates, this has no legal connotation. The products mentioned however - ready meals and yogurts would have had USE BY dates, which are a different thing altogether.
It is, we are told, dangerous to eat foods after their use by dates and therefore it is illegal to sell them then.

Whether you want to be able to buy out of date food is not relevent here, Tesco was breaking the law and was punished for it.

    It's only a game

Hmm well there is a difference:

Sell by date - stores can be fined for selling things past this date. As long as the store marks it down they can sell up to the date.

Use by date - stores can be fined quite heavily for breaking this one and items should be thrown if not frozen etc..

Best before - recommendation only - stores can carry on selling at a reduced price for up to 3 months after the best before - mostly found on chocolate, crisps etc...
Not really comping any more as too ill - but hoping to win £1000+ in 2017 in cash prizes - watch this space!

There is no such thing as a sell by date!
Use by dates are used for food safety, it is illegal to sell food past its use by date.
Best before dates are only a guarantee of food quality. It is not illegal to sell food past its best before date, as long as it is fit for consumption.
Any other varation, eg display until etc have no legal meaning.

That's why the fine was so high, because all the products mentioned in the article had 'use by' dates.
