Does anything else need to connect to the network (broadband, printer, NAS etc)? If not, it's simply a case of plugging any network cable between the two, and sharing any folders you want to share, by right clicking the folder, properties, sharing, and select the options you want, then OK.

You share folders by right clicking them and following instructions as advised by timbim above.

Then simply look in "my network places", or whatever they've called it in vista, and you should be able to see it. You can also map the location as a network drive to my computer to make saving things there easier.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

A straight through will work just as well. All network ports even from before XP are auto-sensing, they can work out how they need to set themselves up. crossovers cables are only needed for very old computers.
Er... can you provide a link to something to confirm this???

if it was straight through it would have the receive and transmit on the same cable.

Thats not right im sure, you can however use a crossover adapter on a striaght through cable.

Hubs and Switches and Routers auto sense not a PCs port
Well, they autosense the speed, don't they, i.e. 10Mbs or 100Mbs. I suppose it's possible to make them autosense the connection type but as it's so trivially simple to alter the cabling I can't quite see what the point would be.

They auto sense speed as its in a range of ~ 10/100 i.e not crossover or straight im pretty sure.

    Er... yeah! That's what I said ;):D
