I didnt believe him but he said he did it and got back over £1000 !!!!!! I was shocked to say the least but he says he pays his tax at the correct rates as far as he was concerned but hey up theres a nice wee refund for him. For business? Of course. But for private individuals? No chance! Think your customer was pulling your leg.

This has to be a windup - you claim to work in a bank, but didn't know you can ask for repayment of overpaid tax? Sheesh.

Indeed. I paid in a cheque for £750 from HMRC yesterday.

Why has beebop23 posted this numerous times?

Well how else do you think you're going to get tax refunded? Only if you've overpaid! That can be for a variety of reasons. In my case it was due to working only part of two tax years but paying tax as if I'd be earning for the whole year.

For this tax year it was simply a case of phoning the relevant tax office, explaining that I expected to have over paid due to PAYE, and confirming what I had earned with what the had on record. A few weeks later and my cheque has arrived.

For the tax year previous it is slightly more complicated because I earned some money untaxed and so they sent me a form to fill in to confirm these details and I expect they'll send me another cheque shortly.

Clearly if your customer did manage to get a refund he wasn't paying the correct amount of tax.
