Getting out of my SKY contract early

Hello,
If there's a dedicated Sky section of the forum please feel free to move this there, I can't find one though.
I wonder if you can help, have had Sky for 6 months in a rented flat. As I've just been laid off at work I no longer wish to keep the rented flat or Sky, and intend to move back in with parents, who already have Sky.
As I understand Sky's complicated T&Cs, I am committed to 12 months, so must pay for the remaining months even if I don't use Sky, and also pay a £120 installation charge (which was subsidised by Sky on the condition that I connected my box to a phone line for 12 months). Otherwise I could pay a £40 moving charge if I wanted to get Sky installed somewhere else.
Not really so keen to pay anymore than I have to, so my suggested course of action is as follows, please tell me if you think this will work!
1. Get parents to cancel Sky (they've had it for >12 months)
2. Don't tell Sky anything about my situation but continue paying direct debit
3. Move my viewing card to my parent's Sky system and move out of flat
4. Get parents to reimburse me for cost of Sky
I wonder about the telephone line rule, can Sky tell which phone number the box is connected to, and would I breaching their T&C by moving address without telling them?
Thanks for any help you can give

Sorry to hear about losing your job. Here is what I would do regarding your plan of action:
1-Yes. If they ask the reason why they are cancelling, just tell your parents to say that they are moving house and do not wish to use Sky anymore.
2-Yes. They do not need to know about your current situation (as you still wish to use sky to fulfil your contract).
3-No, because if other occupants rent out that flat they can get free sky that your paying for. Also if your sky box/dish develops problems they will go to the address that you gave them, as you have not given them updated information. Also just to keep Sky happy and not breach their T&Cs that you agreed to.
Tell Sky your moving house and then give them the details of your parents house. If (after giving them the new address of where you will be living) they ask you if you are related to the current people already at that address (from the phone number you give), say no and you should be ok fulfilling your contract at that address.
4-Maybe (You could tell your parents you will pay them back after you get another job).

if you haev had sky for only 6 months and want out of the contract you will have to pay them the remaning 6 months of the contract. If you take the card out and move it to another box, it wont work as the card has to be "married" to the box. you can however call sky and ask them to put you to the lowest package (2 mix) and leave at that. With the 4th option, i would say is not possible as such. You have to have your box connected to a working phone line. now, way to get around that would be phone sky and say you have changed your number and give your mums number after she has cancled sky. (not before as they will see the number is at another address) and leave it like that.
digitalspy should beable to help you though, they are dedicated to sky and digital tv. but as i said, above is prob the only way you can do itNever do things tomorow when you can do them today.0 -
If you only have the standard package (not the premium movie/sports), then the sky card does not need to be married to the box. (I bought a skybox of ebay and installed in bedroom and my card from downstairs works upstairs except for the movies/sports - so know this works.
You could always swap sky boxes over (ie, take your box and married card to your mums) and cancel your mums box and put into flat. That way you are on your contract/package.
You'll still have an issue if your box develops a fault but I guess it's easier to ride this out for six minths than have to pay sky a load of cash for something you're not going to watch.Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.0 -
It would be better to watch something that you paid for. Thats why I suggested telling sky about you moving house in my original post, giving details of your parents' house, rather not saying anything and be liable for sky's property at the rented flat should anything go wrong. That way you should be able to take your card, box and dish with you and keep it at your parent's house and they would be able to enjoy the channels that you paid for, depending on how option no. 4 is implemented.
mclaren's post clearly explains what I was trying to say when giving your new details to sky, to give your details after your mum has cancelled their current contract with sky, otherwise you might run into further trouble.0 -
I had the exact same problem, so I emailed Customer relations (complicated through the contact us link on the sky website) and explained the situation - ie that it wasn't fair for me to be charged any fee's because the situation was out of my control. The fee's were waived...0
